The Los Angeles Police Department has begun to scale back its search for a UCLA student who has been missing for five days, officials said today.

David John Goeser, a fourth-year English student, was last seen by his roommates at about 10 a.m. on Sunday at his apartment on the 1000 block of Roebling Avenue, police said. He was reported missing Tuesday night.

Police found the the 22-year-old’s car at the base of a hiking trail in the Pacific Palisades Wednesday night. Goeser was believed to be somewhere in the area and a search team was called to help find him.

Thursday evening, after no notable success, police began to reduce the size of the search in the Pacific Palisades, concluding that he might have left the area, LAPD said.

David Goeser’s family believes he might be headed to Vancouver, Wash., because a Washington driver’s license was found in his apartment, said Christi Goeser, his mother. It is unclear whether the honors student has connections in Washington, as his family was unaware he visited the state until they uncovered the license, Christi Goeser said.

Anyone with information about the student’s whereabouts can contact the LAPD missing persons department at (213) 996-1800.
