About 85 percent of Wikipedia’s editors are men, and only around 17 percent of the over 1.5 million biographies on the English Wikipedia are about women.
On Sunday, the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon educated participants at the Hammer Museum on how to write and revise Wikipedia articles, specifically about female figures, or film and media created by women. The event aimed to increase female contribution on Wikipedia, said Janani Subramanian, the Hammer Museum’s manager of public programs.
Prior to the event, Stacey Allan, the west coast ambassador of the Art+Feminism Campaign, said the edit-a-thon allowed participants to compensate for content that has historically been missing from the web due to the lack of diversity among contributors.
“When you have a more diverse group of people participating in the writing of history, you’re going to uncover different stories,” Allan said. “The more people involved, the more you get a range of perspectives … and that’s a really important thing to have in such a big worldwide resource.”
The absence of female Wikipedia editors could potentially stem from the gender disparity in computer literacy, Subramanian said, and women’s lack of access to resources that are necessary to edit articles. Female Wikipedia editors tend to work on content more centered around distinguished people and the arts, Allan said, while men lean toward geography and the sciences. Hence the Art+Feminism campaign promotes more coverage of the arts as well as an increase in the recognition of cis and transgender female figures on Wikipedia. Better gender diversity among editors will bring different types of information and perspectives to the site, and could even encourage more mindful gender pronoun usage, she said.

Allan said organizers wanted to highlight females in media and film, like directors and screenwriters, to gain public awareness and support for their contributions. Relating to the theme of the event, Allan used the Wikipedia page of actress Yalitza Aparicio as an example of how articles on Wikipedia are structured and edited. Subramanian also said industry professionals like camera women and stunt women often go unrecognized for their work.
“There’s a lot of names throughout history who haven’t been recognized in terms of film and television, both on-screen and behind the scenes,” Subramanian said.
During the event, Allan informed the audience about Wikipedia principles, such as keeping writing general and having a neutral perspective. Allan also instructed attendees on how to develop and modify Wikipedia articles with their computers, projecting step-by-step visuals onto a screen. Navigating the site, Allan showed the audience that page links in blue means there is existing content for that subject, while page links in red indicate that no information on the subject has been added and edited yet. Subjects on Wikipedia need to have notability to stay on the website, Allan said, and it’s best to find at least three sources to prove this.
After the introductory background information and training, attendees began working on Wikipedia articles. Participants chose subjects to cover either from a list provided by the organizers, or came in with ideas they wanted to research.
Alyssa Davis, an audience member of the event, said she wanted to use Wikipedia to cover female animators from the 1970s. Davis said she attended the workshop to observe how sources are verified for the site and to learn the general process of generating a Wikipedia article.
“I’m constantly clicking on articles and I don’t always fact check to make sure the articles are correct,” Davis said. “I work in the film industry and I think it’s really important for women to be represented on one of the largest … search engines that we have.”

During her presentation, Allan told participants to be bold with their work and not to be afraid of Wikipedia as it is a collaborative effort. Allan said edit-a-thons create a social environment for people to meet and learn from each other. She also said she hopes the campaign enhances the quality and number of Wikipedia articles covering a diverse range of females, including those who may have been overlooked.
“There isn’t a sort of hierarchical editorial framework where there’s one person deciding who’s important,” Allan said. “It’s distributing that power to people all over the world.”
Bodybuilders from the 60’s through the early 80’s would drink a cup of coffee before heading to the gym to get a little pre-workout boost of energy.
Nowadays, we have pre-workout gummies and bulk powders, containing caffeine and other substances meant to bolster one’s performance at the gym. Lately in the fitness community, the popularity of pre-workout supplements has been rising, in addition to protein supplements. Some students at UCLA have also started to implement pre-workout supplements into their training in order to aid them in their workout sessions.
In 1982, the first pre-workout supplement Ultimate Orange was created in Venice, California. Since then, pre-workout supplements have become a lot more sophisticated, coming in a variety of flavors and catered for different purposes such as muscle growth, strength, energy and antioxidants.
Some people may opt for coffee or energy drinks as a pre-workout beverage. While the caffeine in the coffee and energy drinks can certainly boost one’s energy levels during a workout, there are other performance-enhancing ingredients in a pre-workout. Besides alertness, pre-workout can also assist in muscle recovery, increased blood flow during exercise and in delaying the onset of muscle fatigue. The most common ingredients that are found in most pre-workout supplements are caffeine, beta-alanine, L-arginine and creatine.
Tommy Ervin, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student, has been a regular consumer of pre-workout supplements since his first year of college.
“The reason why I started using (pre-workout) was the inconsistent sleep (or lack thereof) in college,” said Ervin.
Ervin said he believes pre-workout supplements provide him with more sustained energy throughout his workouts. However, he said the effectiveness of pre-workout is more mental than physical. While pre-workout supplements may not make a huge difference on a daily basis, Ervin said he thinks that its effects are more prominent in the long term for avid bodybuilders like himself.
“Caffeine helps with (leg workouts). When you’re squatting something heavy, it makes it feel more effortless than before,” said Ervin.
Caffeine is a stimulant that increases one’s alertness. The consumption of caffeine leads to increased heart rate and energy levels that allows one to have a more productive workout. Additionally, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that caffeine likely has fat-burning properties.
“I started taking (pre-workout) to help with lean muscle growth and pre-workout has certain ingredients like caffeine, beta-alanine and citrulline which helps with endurance and provides a bit of an energy boost for workouts,” said Rahul Hingorani, a third-year physics student.
Another important ingredient found in pre-workout supplements is creatine. Creatine leads to an increased production of ATP in the body, which is the main energy source for intense physical activity. This helps enhance performance by providing people with more energy when carrying out endurance and resistance training. Besides increasing available energy in the body, creatine also improves strength and increases muscle size.
Another component commonly found in pre-workout supplements is the non-essential amino acid beta-alanine. While exercising, our muscles produce lactic acid which in turn is converted to lactate and hydrogen ions resulting in tiredness. Beta-alanine then increases the levels of carnosine which serve to lower the acidity in the muscles, enabling the consumer to continue exercising.
Pre-workout supplements also enhance one’s workout by promoting the dilation of blood vessels allowing more oxygen to be delivered to the muscles. The component that is responsible for the widening of blood vessels is L-arginine, which produces nitric oxide that promotes vasodilation and muscle “pumps,” which is the increased muscle size during a workout from the dilation of blood vessels.
While pre-workout supplements are seemingly harmless and beneficial for one’s workouts, there are some potential negative side effects of regularly consuming them. Some pre-workout supplements contain 200 to 400 milligrams of caffeine per serving and this is about the caffeine content of two to four cups of coffee.
Hingorani has been taking pre-workout supplements for almost two years and said he has only had one bad experience with them. He once took a pre-workout supplement that had a higher caffeine content than he was accustomed to, causing him to feel exhausted at the end of his workout.
Consuming too much caffeine can cause one’s heart rate to accelerate and cause jittering and feelings of dizziness. For people who are not accustomed to such high caffeine doses, pre-workout supplements can cause high blood pressure and cardiac arrest in extreme cases.
In order to make up for the subpar taste of pre-workout supplements, manufacturers often add artificial sweeteners. While these artificial sweeteners tend to have minimal calories, they are not necessarily healthy – many of them can have detrimental effects on a consumer’s metabolism, increasing the risk for diabetes.
The increasing popularity of pre-workout supplements could be due to the additional effects of the other compounds found in them. Some pre-workout supplements are also tailored to certain fitness goals such as muscle building or fat loss, which is another reason why students find them attractive. Researchers at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale found that the placebo effect could also be another factor in students choosing to implement pre-workout supplements as it makes them perceive their workouts to be easier.
Sure, there’s a bit of debate surrounding pre-workout supplements. While they do have the potential to enhance one’s workout experience, they should be used in moderation – Ervin said he recommends taking smaller portions than the recommended serving size, and to always read the ingredients to make sure they don’t contain excessive amounts of caffeine or potentially harmful substances.
At the end of the day though, pre-workout supplements are artificial supplements, so it may be better to stick to a cup of coffee as a before the gym pick-me-up, especially for more casual gym rats.
Farhang Foundation held their 11th annual celebration of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, at UCLA.
University police arrested a man on campus Sunday for vandalism.
UCPD Lt. Kevin Kilgore said in an email that Rogelio Velez III, 48, was found slashing tires of cars at the Sunset Village parking structure on the Hill by witnesses and fled in a vehicle. UCPD later found Velez at Dickson Court and arrested him.
Velez was booked for felony vandalism and possession of a knife on university property. He was transported to Los Angeles County Jail in lieu of $40,000 bail.
This case is still under investigation. Anyone with information about the case can call UCPD detectives at 310-825-1491.
The Bruins completed a four-run comeback to defeat the Trojans 7-5 at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2016.
The Bruins opened Pac-12 play with back-to-back wins, but Stella Sampras Webster still identified some room for improvement.
“Who knows what we are going to do with our doubles teams,” the coach said. “We’ll look to see how we can have more balance in our doubles lineup. We’re losing that doubles point and that’s just something that we’ve got to figure out.”
No. 6 UCLA women’s tennis (9-2, 2-0 Pac-12) defeated Arizona State (5-6, 0-2) and Arizona (8-5, 0-2) on consecutive days by an identical 4-2 margin. The Bruins dropped a closely fought doubles point against the Sun Devils and lost No. 1 doubles against the Wildcats.
UCLA lost the doubles point in four of its last six matches.
The tandem of sophomore Abi Altick and freshman Taylor Johnson were leading 4-1 on court three against Arizona State’s duo of Samantha Alicea and Sammi Hampton, but eventually lost 7-6 (9-7).
“We were pretty much leading the whole match but they kept coming back and we couldn’t quite close it out,” Altick said. “It was disappointing but (Johnson) and I came back well in singles.”
The pair came out strong the following day to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 victory.
“They were really determined to close it after they got up,” Sampras Webster said. “They could have easily got a little tight but they did a great job.”
UCLA’s top doubles pair this weekend – the No.16 duo of freshman Elysia Bolton and redshirt junior Jada Hart – lost 7-5 against Arizona State and 6-2 against Arizona.
“I don’t really know (what went wrong),” Bolton said. “On Friday, we just lost and today (Saturday), it didn’t really come together for us. Just didn’t play our best.”
Bolton and Hart are 16-7 overall, 5-4 in dual matches and 0-2 on court one.
“Everyone is really good on court one and it’s hard if you get broken or have a bad game,” Sampras Webster said. “These teams are good and they will take advantage. I think it was a good experience for them to play against one of the top teams in the country.”
Senior Ayan Broomfield was benched against Arizona for rest. Senior Alaina Miller retired in the middle of her match against Arizona’s Talya Zandberg, losing 7-6 (7-4), 3-0.
“(Miller) will be fine but she had some issues so we decided to pull her,” Sampras Webster said. “It’s nothing serious, but we didn’t want anything to get worse. We got (Altick) to clinch so I think it was the right move.”
UCLA will next face No. 23 Pepperdine at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu on Wednesday.
