With concrete and focused plans to address issues currently plaguing student life ““ parking and transportation, office and storage space for student groups and advocating for Westwood’s needs at the city government level ““ Sherlyn Mossahebfar of Bruins United should be USAC’s next Facilities commissioner.
While both candidates are experienced, Mossahebfar outshines her competitor, Angela Cheung of Students First!, with a broad range of doable plans.
Mossahebfar plans to reroute campus shuttles to include fraternity row and the apartments, as well as to include a stop at the Ralphs in Westwood, to ease shopping for the many students who lack their own transportation.
And as the current director of the Westwood Neighborhood Council, which is en route to an official city charter, Mossahebfar is in a unique position to address tenants’ rights issues and the ongoing apron-parking saga.
While the Editorial Board supports sustainability, Cheung’s idealistic recycling plans are gimmicky and will be minimally effective. How many students are really going to lug their old course readers to campus to turn them in for fluorescent lightbulbs as part of her Light for Readers program?
The two candidates also differ on how to address the lack of office and storage space for student organizations, an ongoing and controversial issue within student government.
Cheung seeks to find more space outside of Kerckhoff Hall (which USAC has no control of) and subsidize inconvenient off-campus storage. Mossahebfar has detailed plans to more efficiently use existing space to better meet the needs of more organizations, a plan that will garner results.
A vote for Mossahebfar is a vote for a qualified candidate with the plans and the potential to affect sorely needed changes on issues of concern to the UCLA community.
