Clarification: The director of multimedia development position was created last spring. Matt Lee was the first person hired to fill the position for an entire year.

Its voice is changing and it’s having a growth spurt. Journalism is going through puberty.

At this moment, you probably have several tabs open on your Internet browser. Aside from Facebook and Twitter, and perhaps your email, one of your tabs contains this article.

I’m willing to bet that you receive most of your news online, whether it’s from the Daily Bruin or any other source.

But you don’t stop at just news articles, do you? No. You probably receive most of your information through online multimedia as well. Whether it’s through video, interactive graphics, photos or podcasts, you consume your information in a new and engaging manner.

Yet, despite this addiction to quick and easy visuals, many of you still love to hold a solid print edition in your hands.

This is where I come in. My position at the Daily Bruin was created last spring and has the very long-winded title of the director of Multimedia development. I have the privilege of being the first staff member to hold this job for an entire year. The position was created in the face of the changes that news media has been facing in the last decade, with the advent of the Internet, social media and bloggers.

What I want to do is deliver to you, our readers, the same timely, professional and relevant information that you have always sought from us here at the Daily Bruin.

The Daily Bruin you can look forward to this year is one that will actively seek your engagement with the content we produce. You can expect more of the same high-quality news writing, but we hope that the addition of new multimedia presentations from us, including a new blog called Focus, which features video, photo and radio content, will allow you as a user to better consume information in this post-pubescent media age.

Lee is the 2011-2012 director of Multimedia development. Email Lee at mlee1@media.ucla.edu.
