Comment policy

The Daily Bruin is a community news source. We believe that hearing from you, the reader, is important. Quality comments lend additional insight and information to stories, explore different viewpoints of an issue and let us know about things we may have overlooked.

We moderate comments to facilitate productive and civil discussion. The overarching rule for comments is that they should add substance to the discussion while being considerate of others. Below is a list of specific guidelines we use to moderate comments. You should be aware of them when commenting so that your comments are not deleted.

  1. Don’t be rude or hostile to others. Your comment will be removed even if the rest of it is solid.
  2. Keep it appropriate. Refrain from using obscenities and other potentially offensive language to get your point across.
  3. No low-effort comments. Comments that don’t add anything substantial to the discussion will be removed.
  4. Avoid generalizations. Blanket statements like “all x are y”, stereotypes, racism, sexism, etc. don’t add to the discussion and will be removed.
  5. Stay on topic. Comments must directly address an aspect of the article.
  6. Assume good faith. Give other commenters the benefit of the doubt. If you are unsure whether or not someone is being genuine, ask clarifying questions; don’t make accusations.
  7. Remember the golden rule. You may not agree with someone’s position, but keep the conversation civil. Address others the way you want to be addressed.

If you believe a commenter is exhibiting ill behavior and/or violating any of these guidelines, you may flag their comment for moderation.

We reserve the right to disable commenting on particularly sensitive or controversial topics, in addition to archiving old threads, and to make changes to this comment policy at any time.
