Q&A: YouTube star AJ Rafael honored to perform at the Verizon Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Tour

The month of May was designated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) back in 1992. Since 2008, Verizon Wireless has celebrated APAHM with an annual concert tour featuring prominent Asian-American artists. This year, the event will be headlined by Korean-American singer Jay Park. Opening for him on the West Coast will be the Pan-Asian female pop group, Blush, and Filipino-American YouTube star, AJ Rafael. They will make their final stop in Los Angeles on May 27 at Club Nokia. Rafael talked to the Daily Bruin’s Michelle Lee about his experiences as an Asian-American artist in the music industry and touring in different continents.

Q&A: DJ Shot shares meaning behind the name and journey behind the turntables

Jose Robles, also known as DJ Shot, began his music career as a DJ throwing parties at his home in Los Angeles. Now, with over 3,500 fans on Facebook and a fan base ranging from high school teenagers to post-grad students, Robles spins his turntables at some of Los Angeles’ most well-known venues including the Avalon and the Belasco. Robles spoke to Daily Bruin’s Marjorie Yan about his new residency at SOL nightclub as well as how he’s grown as a DJ within the past two years.

May 21, 2012 ““ In the spirit of Taiwanese American Heritage Week, Bruins for Taiwan hosted a workshop titled “Tea 101 and Tea Ritual.” The presentation included taste samples of green tea, pouchong tea, amber oolong and black tea, along with an explanation of how these play a role in the Taiwanese culture. Yet, as a new social change group on campus, the club’s main cup of tea is raising awareness for Taiwan’s struggle for recognition as an independent country. Founder of the club, Ginny Wu, a second-year economics student, and Vice President Robin Lee, a second-year global studies student, share with us the experiences they’ve faced with their Taiwanese American heritage, and how Bruins for Taiwan plans to respond.

UCLA chancellor responds to racial discrimination lawsuit

Chancellor Gene Block issued a statement today in response to a lawsuit filed against the UC Board of Regents that claimed the university failed to prevent discrimination, harassment and retaliation against a faculty member in the David Geffen School of Medicine.

Dr. Christian Head, a head and neck surgeon, said in the complaint filed April 17 in the Los Angeles County Superior Court that he has been subject to routine public humiliation by colleagues.

Former Chancellor Charles E. Young calls for discussion on proposal for increased independence at individual UC campuses

Former UCLA chancellor Charles E. Young asked the UC Board of Regents to formally consider a proposal for increased independence for individual UC campuses in an email sent last week.

“Real delegation or devolution from the center to the campuses has been needed for a long time, and that rationale has grown ever stronger in recent years, as UC grew ever bigger and more complicated,” Young wrote in an email sent to former UC chancellors and other officials and

In April, UC Berkeley officials including chancellor Robert Birgeneau , titled “Modernizing Governance at the University of California,” which proposed taking some governing powers away from the UC Board of Regents and giving them to individual campuses.

Campus boards, created under the new structure, would then make “quicker and more locally attuned” decisions, the report states.

UC President Mark Yudof in response to the report saying he disagrees with the proposal “in current form.” No formal review of the report has been conducted since its release.

In his email, Young said that while he does not agree with all of the details in the proposal, he supports further discussion, and has asked for a formal appointment from the UC President to help lead that discourse.
