Robbery attempted on 600 block of Landfair Avenue Friday night

An attempted robbery occurred in the 600 block of Landfair Avenue Friday evening, according to university police.

At about 10:35 p.m. Friday, a person was walking south near an apartment building at 625 Landfair Ave. when a man came out of the shadows at the entrance to the building and grabbed him, according to a UCPD report released Saturday.

UC Board of Regents approves tuition increases for professional programs

The UC Board of Regents voted Wednesday to approve fee increases for professional programs for the 2012-13 school year.

The newly approved tuition levels, known as professional degree supplemental tuition charges, will affect more than 50 programs within the UC, ranging from establishing supplemental tuition for the first time in some programs to increasing the tuition levels by up to 35 percent in others.

Of the 57 programs impacted with increased tuition, seven have approved fee increases of more than 10 percent, including UCLA’s nursing program.

The remaining programs will undergo tuition increases of less than 10 percent, or remain stable.

UCLA fire marshal investigates reported arson at Boelter Hall

The UCLA fire marshal is investigating a reported arson that occurred behind Boelter Hall Friday morning.

At 1:48 a.m., university police were notified about a fire in a recycle waste area behind Boelter Hall, according to a UCPD report released Friday.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was called immediately, said Brian Humphrey, an LAFD spokesman. The fire department arrived on scene at 1:56 a.m. and put out the flames moments later. There was no major damage and no one was injured, he said.

UCLA alumna Cinthia Flores appointed UC student regent-designate

Cinthia Flores, UCLA alumna and second-year law student at UC Irvine, was formally appointed as the 2013-2014 student regent today at the bimonthly UC Board of Regents meeting.

Beginning with today’s meeting, Flores immediately assumes the position of student regent-designate, a non-voting seat on the board, and will become the student regent the following year.

Protesters stage 'zombie takeover' at UC Board of Regents meeting

About 30 UC students and staff members “”mdash; some dressed in zombie attire “”mdash; briefly interrupted the bimonthly UC Board of Regents meeting this morning to protest tuition increases for professional schools, the possibility of a midyear tuition increase and what they called “privatization of the university.”

After expressing grievances during the meeting’s public comment period, students waved homemade signs, some chanting, “This is not a crisis of funding; this is a crisis of priority.”

UC San Francisco police issued a dispersal order after Regent Chair Sherry Lansing repeatedly asked the protesters to leave. The protesters complied, and no arrests were made.
