Concert Review: After six-year hiatus, A Perfect Circle performs at Avalon Hollywood, and it feels like no time has passed

Six years had passed between A Perfect Circle’s reunion performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Oct. 27 and the last one before it. It finally felt, apparently, what much of the rock world has felt for some time, that we could use a bit more from the masters of the art of darkness.

LIVE BLOG: Joseph Gordon-Levitt speaks about hitrecord.org

Joseph Gordon-Levitt spoke in Ackerman Grand Ballroom on Nov. 8. He discussed his collaborative production company hitrecord.org which allows members of the site to contribute to video projects. Morgan Glier/DAILY BRUIN

While “Inception” may have been the blockbuster of the summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt made an impression on Bruins long before that. His talk tonight at Ackerman Grand Ballroom, hosted by UCLA Campus Events Commission, has sold out nearly 1000 seats and brought out fans of “10 Things I Hate About You” and “(500) Days of Summer” alike.

The 29-year old actor comes to UCLA tonight to talk about his production company hitrecord.org which allows artists from all over to contribute and collaborate on video productions.

According to Daniel Soto, CEC speakers director and a third-year geography and environmental studies student, tickets for the event sold out two hours after the Central Ticket Office (CTO) opened on Wednesday, Nov. 3. The 100 tickets released the following morning were gone in 15 minutes.

The Good pick: 'Blazing Saddles,' 'Spaceballs' offer good old-fashioned parody

If the “Scary Movie” series, or its offshoots ““ “Dance Movie,” “Epic Movie,” etc. ““ are any indication, parody in Hollywood has died a cruel, absurd death.

There is something nostalgic, then, about watching “Blazing Saddles” or “Spaceballs,” which is probably not the response Mel Brooks originally had in mind. The former is Brooks’ brilliant send-up of the Western genre, featuring his typically nonsensical wordplay, a man punching a horse, an Oscar-nominated theme song, Nazis, far too many people named Johnson and a legendary farting scene. The latter gives the same treatment to “Star Wars,” pitting Captain Lone Starr, his half-man half-dog sidekick Barfolomew and the power of the Schwartz against Pizza the Hutt and Dark Helmet, all for the love of one Princess Vespa. If you make it more than a few minutes through either of them without laughing, you’re thinking too hard.

“Blazing Saddles” plays at 8 p.m. and “Spaceball” at 10 p.m. at the Downtown Independent Theater on Friday, Nov. 12.

Food Truck Junkie: Manila Machine churns out tasty sliders

Probably my favorite thing about the food trucks at UCLA is the opportunity they provide for experiencing new cuisines. Being confined to the limits of Westwood for the majority of my time at UCLA, I’ve constantly been frustrated with the lack of variety in options when it comes to restaurants. While the selection may be adequate in trying to provide at least a couple of options for any preference, it can hardly be described as having anything remotely adventurous. This is why, when food trucks serving less accessible food come to campus, I make sure to take full advantage of them. One of the best examples of these trucks is The Manila Machine, which can be found at the Court of Sciences on Friday, Nov. 12.
