2011 Coachella lineup trumps last year's performers

A three-day concert full of people who may have not showered for days sounds weird, but when an amazing lineup is put together, people are willing to sacrifice hygiene for great music.

The lineup for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which runs April 15-17, was revealed yesterday and the Facebook statuses flooded out within minutes. Some of the headliners are Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire and Kanye West. Other artists such as Cold War Kids, Lauryn Hill, Damian Marley and Wiz Khalifa will be making an appearance as well. I almost passed out when I saw these people names’ on the computer screen.

There are different opinions about whether the performers from this year are better than the ones in 2010.

Pi Kappa Phi's Acoustic Coffee House, a benefit for a great cause, provided a stage for UCLA student talent

It seems that any time I attend an on campus student production, I am wowed by the talent that exists at UCLA. Tuesday’s second annual Pi Kappa Phi Acoustic Coffee House, a benefit for Pi Kappa Phi’s national philanthropy, Push America, was no exception.

Fire in the Kitchen: The forgotten nuts

This week was a lucky one. I wasn’t alone, trying to turn recipes into food ““ I had a sous-chef.
Fourth-year international development studies student Anna Schoenbrunner heard my call for good cooks, and together, we made some delightful crab cakes. Read about how they turned out here.

Here is the backstory that didn’t make it to print: A few hours before my cooking date, I ran to Trader Joe’s to buy the ingredients. I am notorious for forgetting to buy a single, important ingredient, but all appeared to go smoothly. I decided to use the remainder of a huge canister of almonds in my pantry to substitute for the macadamia nuts (the recipe said that this was OK). I got back to my apartment and saw that all of the almonds were gone. I had been out for a while, actually.

Seating donation requirement reduced for the new Pauley Pavilion

UCLA fans, rejoice.

The UCLA athletic department announced today that there will be a reduction of the required donation to the Wooden Athletic Fund in order to receive priority seating in the renovated Pauley Pavilion.

“We are happy to announce that due to the enormous generosity of hundreds of donors during our Campaign of Champions, all per seat Wooden Athletic Fund donation requirements throughout renovated Pauley Pavilion will be reduced by 20 percent from the previously-announced levels,” UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said in a news release.

Golden Globes fashion a snooze fest

Another year, another awards show where everyone scrutinizes what the stars wear on the red carpet, even when they are all practically wearing the same thing. Well, everyone except for Helena Bonham Carter, who wore different shoes on each foot. Now that is a feat. (Pun so intended.)

In this week’s Fashion or Whatever column, I discuss the constant boredom seen on the awards show red carpet, and when I am talking about boring, I am not lying. Read about it here.
