Caught in a bad movie romance

It occurred to me the other day that I will always pay to see a bad movie. You think I would learn my lesson, but time and time again I find myself sitting in a movie theater wondering why I paid $10 or more to see a movie that should have never made it to production. All of this usually happens in the first 10 minutes ““ that’s when you know a movie is bad. But I think that there is a certain appreciation for terrible movies that keeps propelling me to the theaters, regardless of all common sense.

Discovering the thrills of thrifting

I see so many fashion bloggers who wear thrifted clothes that it’s ridiculous. How can one be so stylish and yet be so economically conscious at the same time?

This is a conundrum that is more my speed, frugality-wise, so in this week’s Fashion or Whatever column, I discover the thrills of thrifting, and venture into one of Los Angeles’ best places for cheap vintage clothes, Jet Rag’s Sunday dollar sales. And I sure did realize how much people were so into thrifting. Especially hipsters.

So, what are your experiences thrifting?

Decide early on places to stay during the Coachella music festival

Money was spent, tears were shed and anxiety was increased, but in the end, Coachella tickets were purchased. Now what? This is a question many first-time Coachellans like myself have.

One main concern is where to stay during the music festival. The first suitable option is car camping at Coachella. In order to do this you must have purchased a car camping pass on Ticketmaster. Car camping consist of a designated parking area that is 10 feet by 30 feet. The spot is big enough to fit your compact car and however many tents and people you can squeeze in.

If you are like me and couldn’t get a car camping pass because of the high purchasing rate from scalpers, then you must look elsewhere for shelter.

Bus Stops: Dining options at the Getty Center

Medium Coffee ““ $2.25 tax
Cinnamon Roll ““ $2.95 tax
Bus Fare ““ $3.00
Total ““ $8.70

Eating at the Getty is a little bit like Goldilocks visiting the home of the three bears ““ there are three options, but only one can be just right. If you want something fancy, perhaps a nice crab cake benedict with a hollandaise sauce (made from egg yolks and lemon) for Sunday brunch, then you’ll want to visit the Restaurant, located on the top level of the structure to the right of the Arrival Plaza (if you’re facing toward the museum).

If that sounds a little ridiculous to you, there are also snack bars that serve coffee, pastries and candy. I choose this option but ended up with cold coffee so bitter all the milk and sugar in the world couldn’t save it.

Q&A with Coby Getzug, who plays Moritz in upcoming performance of 'Spring Awakening' at Pantages Theatre

The Daily Bruin interviewed Coby Getzug, who is playing the role of Moritz in ‘Spring Awakening’ at the Pantages Theatre through Feb. 13.

Daily Bruin: How did you get started in this business?
Coby Getzug: I always loved to do theater when I was a kid, and when I got to high school, I applied and got into L.A. County High School for the Arts. So I went there for high school. I was a theater major and so, at that school, it was kind of like a college conservatory. So we had academic classes every morning and then every afternoon, we had our arts classes. So I had five theater classes that rotated throughout the week. So that was basically my start. I never really did this professionally until I was about a junior in high school and then I got cast in the Broadway revival of “Brighton Beach Memoirs” by Neil Simon. So my first semester of my senior year, I was actually in New York City. I went to high school there, and I understudied that show. Then I came back and finished my senior year at LACHSA. Over the summer, I did “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” at Mark Taper Forum, and then I got cast in “Spring Awakening” and left in September to do that.

DB: So it’s only been a couple of years and you’re already in “Spring Awakening?”
CG: Yeah, it’s been really crazy. Actually, I was planning on going to UCLA this year and then I accepted and got cast in “Spring Awakening” two or three weeks later. So, that didn’t work out. But I was planning on attending UCLA this year.
