UCLA softball staves off elimination with 12-4 win against Jacksonville in NCAA Regional

Injuries, injuries and then some ““ but no matter.

By the conclusion of competition Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., the UCLA softball team finds itself still very much alive after downing Jacksonville 12-4 in what proved to be a nightcap contest.

The Bruins (35-18) defeated the Dolphins (44-16) 2-0 in Friday’s opening game of the double elimination-format NCAA Gainesville Regional, only to lose to the No. 4 seed Florida Gators (49-9) 4-2 in their first game today.

That loss forced the rematch against Jacksonville, which had eliminated Bethune-Cookman (33-26) earlier today to earn a chance to face UCLA again.

*UPDATED:* Small fire extinguished in Ackerman Union

An oil fryer in Ackerman Union’s Panda Express set fire around 2:40 today and was quickly extinguished by employees, police said.

Building occupants were evacuated when the fire alarm went off, disrupting events taking place in Ackerman for Alumni Day.

Alumna Robin McGrath said she was disappointed to leave a panel with Disney representatives called “Insider’s Guide to Creativity and Innovation.”

“The timing was very poor,” McGrath said.
