It sure seems like there’s someone pulling the strings that keep UCLA seniors Thomas Amberg and Nick Vogel connected.

With six wins in its last seven matchups, UCLA men’s volleyball had Hawai’i’s number coming into the weekend. Even though long distance calls are expensive, the Bruins continued to dial the Warriors. After this weekend though, Hawai’i probably won’t pick up the phone anymore.

Watching the UCLA men’s volleyball team practice Wednesday morning, nobody would have guessed they played one of its poorest matches of the season the night before against Long Beach State.

History was working against the Bruins Tuesday night.

For the first time in six years, UCLA has a double-digit win streak. The last time the Bruins had a streak this long was in the 2005-2006 season, which catapulted them to their 19th NCAA Championship.

A chorus of yells echoed throughout the Student Activities Center early Thursday morning as a motivated men’s volleyball team engaged in an intrasquad scrimmage to end its practice.

In his final year as the coach of the UCLA men’s volleyball team, Al Scates came into Friday night’s showdown at USC looking to add another signature win to his team’s record this season in unfriendly territory. Instead, he received the warmest welcome from the unlikeliest of places.
