After Saturday’s sweep of UC Irvine, the team that sent UCLA into its three-week long skid, the Bruins seem to have regained their poise.

Redshirt sophomore libero Evan Mottram yelled as he drop-kicked the ball into the wall. Tension was in the air after a missed dig during practice. But this late in the season, tension is unavoidable for UCLA men’s volleyball, which will play in its final two regular season home games this weekend.

UCLA left everyone in attendance shell-shocked as it swept the No. 1 team in the nation, UC Irvine, in the team’s own gym.

Senior setter Kyle Caldwell placed his outstretched arms on top his head and let out a gasp of breath for a quick rest in between points.

Chasing an errant ball in the third set, senior setter Kyle Caldwell barreled into a water cooler, spilling its contents across the floor. As the janitors began mopping up the mess, USC continued mopping up a sloppy UCLA team.

It was the decisive fifth set that the Bruins will lose sleep over. UCLA’s own miscues cost the team several points en route to the 15-11 set loss that gave Irvine the match.

As the UCLA men’s volleyball team’s practice was coming to a close, sophomore outside hitter Gonzalo Quiroga clapped his hands together in frustration as he missed a dig off of a serve. Quiroga silently retook his position, determined to do it right.
