As Judith Prager walks into a classroom, she can’t help but notice the deviation of learners from what you would expect of a typical writing student.

It was in her blood. One of her first words was “Leo,” the name of her stuffed lion. And from an early age, Laurel Serieys knew that her passion rested within researching wild cats and learning the impact of urban society on their survival.

Twisted, nude women with long, flowing hair float on thin streams of water, the fluidity of their bodies matching that of their aquatic surroundings. A large fish with etched scales swims alongside them as their bodies float off the page.

The exhibition consists of roughly 40 pieces from the Fowler’s permanent holdings, said Patrick Polk, curator of Latin American and Caribbean popular arts. It represents an introductory look at some of the different ways in which animals are depicted in regional and family traditions.

The recipients of the 2012 Emerging Voices literary fellowship, sponsored by nonprofit organization PEN Center USA, will read at the UCLA Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater on Wednesday. The event marks the completion of the fellowship, which provides new writers with the tools necessary to jump-start a professional writing career. Daily Bruin’s Braden Baseley spoke with Jonathan Alfi, an art history alumnus and one of the recipients of this year’s fellowship, about his experience in the program, his first novel and his plans for the future.
