Published study examines the effects of deep brain stimulation on memory-impairing ailments

In a study published in February by Dr. Itzhak Fried, postdoctoral fellow Nanthia Suthana and their colleagues, they discovered that deep brain stimulation (DBS) might have the ability to improve the memory of individuals suffering from memory-impairing ailments. Deep brain stimulation is the process of implanting electrodes in a patient’s brain during their time spent in the hospital for epilepsy treatment. Dr. Hugh T. Blair, UCLA associate professor of behavioral neuroscience, explains that deep brain stimulation is just starting down the path toward fixing impaired memory, but there is still a long way to go.

Designer creates games to challenge video game culture and stereotypes

Mar. 15, 2012 – Paolo Pedercini is not a game designer; he is a designer who uses games as a way to convey messages not normally found in video games. He hopes that his video games can start conversations about the current video game culture, of which he does not approve. On Tuesday he gave a design media arts lecture on the bottom floor of UCLA’s Broad Art Center, which excited the small crowd that was present.

The novel history of Café 451

Feb. 22, 2012 – For many of us here at UCLA, the newly renovated Charles E. Young Research Library has become a haven for the working student and for the deep-thinking, coffee-drinking intellectual. UCLA’s Café 451 in Charles E. Young Research Library is not just a great place to get coffee and think, but homage to one of American history’s greatest authors. “Fahrenheit 451″ is a dystopian novel about a society in which the owning of books has become banned by the government; all existing books are burned by “firemen” who drive around in fire trucks and literally burn piles of books, and entire houses, to the ground.
