Rick Neuheisel ends his home game tradition of speaking before and after matchups

UCLA held on for a 27-17 win over San Jose State on Saturday night, but there was still an empty feeling inside the Rose Bowl.

PASADENA — You can tell a puppy to lay down, but sometimes it won’t listen.

Especially if it’s not a puppy anymore.

When San Jose State running back Brandon Rutley busted through a box of 11 UCLA defenders on third-and-1 and raced to a 65-yard touchdown late in the third quarter Saturday night, the Bruins and Spartans were deadlocked at 17, and it was hard to tell the big dog and the little one apart.

The cupcake game wasn’t so sweet, after all.

UCLA welcomed San Jose State to the Rose Bowl, the Bruins knowing well that the Spartans had a history of going big and losing big. But that wasn’t the case Saturday night.

The Bruins edged out the Spartans, 27-17, avoiding what would have been a monumental upset for a San Jose State team that couldn’t beat a Football Bowl Subdivision school last year.

PASADENA — San Jose State football has become a perennial punching bag over the years, but through one half at the Rose Bowl, UCLA is nowhere close to landing the knockout it was hoping for.

The Bruins took a 14-7 lead on a 14-yard touchdown catch by redshirt junior tight end Joe Fauria with 5:22 to play in the second quarter and took that lead into the locker room.
