UCLA women’s track and field has a strong Olympic tradition. Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Gail Devers and Jeanette Bolden headline the list of 64 athletes who have competed on this international stage as UCLA track and field alumni.

One current and two soon-to-be Bruins will be in Poland this week to compete in the World Junior Championships from July 8 to 13. Current men’s team member Dylan Knight will join female newcomers Camilla Dencer and Ryann Krais at the meet open to 18- and 19-year-olds.

Two weeks ago at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, the women’s track and field team’s season came to a crashing halt at the NCAA Championship meet.

In track and field, usually it is the big-name athlete that blows the field away and wins the event. Only every so often, a surprise winner comes out of nowhere to capture first place.

While most of us are taking finals and ending our year at UCLA, several women will be working hard as 13 members of the No. 8 women’s track and field team will compete in the NCAA Championships.

NORTHRIDGE “”mdash; In ideal conditions over the warm weekend, the No. 7 women’s track and field team scorched the track, and by the end of the two-day West Region Championships, 10 athletes had earned spots at the upcoming NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

For the No. 8 UCLA women’s track and field team, this is the chance to punch its ticket to Iowa for the NCAA Championships.
