Fifth-year geography and global studies student Jason Caporaletti and third-year geography/environmental studies and Chicana/o studies student Amanda McDowell studied abroad in China this summer. They explain why some believe the country is on its way to becoming a new world superpower. Later, third-year Near Eastern languages and cultures student Carly Olenick talks about digging in Jaffa, Israel, on an archaeology trip. She’ll tell us what she found.

The good, the bad and the truth about drug policy

September 6, 2011 – Mark Kleiman, UCLA professor of public policy, co-authored “Drugs and Drug Policy: What Everyone Needs To Know” with Jonathan P. Caulkins and Angela Hawken.

He stresses a new way of thinking about drugs as neither good nor evil and claims that the drug prevention effort is largely a misinformation campaign. He shares ideas on how to drive down prison populations and reduce violence resulting from drug abuse while reinventing the way people think about drugs. [6:03]

Orientation counselor learns about UCLA, leadership through interaction with new students

July 25, 2011 – New Student Orientation welcomes thousands of students to UCLA over the summer. They are guided by individuals such as counselor and student coordinator Shantel Daniels, a former UCLA student who graduated in the spring. Interacting with new students has shown her what others are capable of, and it’s also helped her learn a bit more about herself. [4:27]

Two graduating fourth-years chat about their experiences with bar-hopping bet

June 6, 2011 – Fourth-year electrical engineering student Jeff Almario and fourth-year economics student Luke Pappis are graduating this spring. To end their college chapter on a high note, they made a bet with each other – hit up the bars every Margarita Monday, Pint Night Tuesday and Long Island Wednesday of this quarter. [3:58]

Fifth-year Design | Media Arts student Cindy Chi’s picks on her for everything from grades to clothes. Matthew and Cindy are a couple at UCLA, and they share with reporter Helen Zhao how family background can affect intimate relationships. Born and raised in Orange County, Cindy did not have a typical American upbringing with her Taiwanese parents.

Long Story Short: Faculty and students remember the landmark societal trends, events in their lives

For a generation of college students, the question is, “Where were you on Sept. 11, 2001?” For older generations, there is the death of John F. Kennedy, the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There are moments that define generations and people remember exactly where they were when they happened. Reporter Helen Zhao asked people around campus to share some of their memories. It turned out that some remember big moments. Others were affected by broader societal trends.
