UC system to ban smoking, chewing tobacco on all campuses
The University of California announced a ban on smoking and chewing tobacco on all UC facilities this week.
This is part of an overall effort to move toward sustainable health and environmental practices, according to UC President Mark Yudof’s letter to UC chancellors earlier this week.
The smoking ban, which will go in effect in 2014, also prohibits the use and sale of all tobacco products.
“Offering a smoke-free environment will contribute positively to the health and well-being of all UC students, faculty, staff and our patients and visitors,” Yudof said in the letter.
Yudof also called on the chancellors of each campus to form a committee to implement a smoke-free policy.
In a similar move last year, the UCLA Health System also banned smoking on its facility.
