College students looking to save money on textbooks can now turn to a new service offered by Amazon.com.

The popular online retailer announced a new textbook rental program on Tuesday, joining retailers like ebay.com that already provide similar services.

Previously, students who bought textbooks on Amazon could sell them back to the company through a textbook buyback program.

In the rental program, students can keep the books for up to 130 days, according to the Amazon website.

Demolition of Saxon Steps to begin Monday

UCLA construction workers will begin demolishing the Saxon Steps, commonly used by students to get from Gayley Avenue to the Hill by UCLA, starting Monday.

The plans have been in the works for months.

Earlier this year, Housing officials deliberated demolishing the staircase because they felt the steps were no longer necessary as a means to get to the apartments and Westwood Village from the Hill, according to Daily Bruin archives

The goal is to put a permanent fence that stretches from the Southern Regional Library on Gayley to De Neve residential hall Holly Ridge, said Alfred Nam, director of rooms operations for the UCLA Housing and Hospitality Services.

First, a temporary chain-link fence will be put up so people don’t walk into the construction site during demolition of the steps and landscaping process, Nam said.

Meanwhile, construction workers will work to create the permanent fence and the irrigation systems for the new landscape.

Construction is scheduled to take about a month, he said.

The steel fence will be 8 feet high, and the project is estimated to cost $80,000, including landscaping, irrigation and fence construction, Nam said.
