Get to know the five bandmates of The Ten Thousand

May 4, 2012 – The Ten Thousand is this year’s closing act in Spring Sing, UCLA’s annual talent showcase. The band has been playing together for about a year, and their sound has yet to be completely formed. Get to know the bandmates, find out about what direction the band wants to go in musically and hear some of Westwood’s own original music.

The Band:

UCPD uses community policing to maintain campus safety in face of budget cuts

Mar. 1, 2012 – With massive budget cuts threatening nearly every department in the UC system, some were worried that cuts to police services would affect campus safety. However, crime rates have largely remained stagnant, and have even decreased in a few key areas. Nancy Greenstein, director of Police Community Services at UCLA, explains how community policing practices, along with more effective use of funds have kept crime at a minimum amidst the recession.

UCLA Breathmobile rolls to Long Beach to treat children with asthma

Jan. 20, 2012 – The UCLA Breathmobile, a self-styled “asthma clinic on wheels,” has been making trips to the Long Beach area for more than two years. Originally funded by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the 33-foot-long RV stays at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA while it’s not being used to diagnose and treat children with asthma symptoms. The Breathmobile’s crew and a school nurse reflect on the program’s goals, its challenges and its achievements. [3:11]

Treehouse Open Mic continues to showcase Westwood's talents as it begins to draw in new crowds

November 8, 2011 – The Treehouse Open Mic is a student-run event that has been going on in Westwood since Fall 2010. Set on Strathmore Avenue in Westwood’s North Village, the Open Mic is an open forum for students to perform in front of an audience in a comfortable atmosphere. While music is the center of the monthly event, there are other acts performed there, such as spoken word poetry, comedy and magic. [3:43]
