As an avid reader of PerezHilton.com, I’ve kept up with Britney’s missed court appointments, her trips to Mexico with her paparazzo boyfriend (now rumored ex-boyfriend), her torn stockings and her boot collection.

On a recent weekend home from school, I went to a masters student art show at UC San Diego. One piece on display was a row of glass bottles. Another was six or so fluorescent light bulbs that flickered on an off at different, apparently random times. And the topper was an oversized stuffed muppet slumped in the middle of the floor.

I started the new year off the same as always: jumping in the ocean, eating black-eyed peas, then falling asleep in front of the TV.

The big news in the art market over the past few weeks has been that a Van Gogh went unsold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. In an illuminating parallel, a pair of leather boots went unsold at a little shoe store in Long Beach last week.

The Disney brand was built on the happily-ever-after fairy tales of 6-year-old birthday parties. Lately though, it seems Disney has forgotten this ““ the last princess musical being 1998’s “Mulan.”

This month is National Novel Writing Month.
