UCLA chosen as favorite to win Pac-12 South title at football media day

On Nov. 17 of last year, UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr rushed past USC’s offensive line untouched. The blown assignment allowed the then-junior a free shot at USC quarterback Matt Barkley, a play that effectively ended the Trojans’ bid for a Pac-12 South title and acted as the symbolic transition of power in Los Angeles collegiate football.

Safety Dietrich Riley forced to medically retire

UCLA football’s Dietrich Riley, who would have been a redshirt junior safety during the upcoming 2013-2014 season, was forced to medically retire Tuesday because of continued neck and shoulder injuries. Riley reportedly was unable to be granted final medical clearance for the team’s upcoming fall camp at Cal State San Bernardino. The former defensive starter last appeared in a game in October of 2011.

Basketball freshman Wanaah Bail to miss four months

On Tuesday, UCLA Athletics announced that men’s basketball freshman forward Wanaah Bail underwent left knee surgery on June 28 to repair torn cartilage. Bail is expected to miss four months while he rehabilitates the damaged cartilage, effective from the date of his surgery.

UCLA football names six players to national award watch lists

This past spring, redshirt senior wide receiver Shaquelle Evans made it clear he was after a spot in UCLA football’s history books as its single-season receiving yards record holder. Three months later, it appears his expectations are being taken seriously, as the Inglewood native was named to the 2013 preseason Biletnikoff Award watch list Tuesday along with 74 of college football’s most highly touted wide receivers.

Contract with basketball coach Steve Alford includes large early buyout clause

On pain of pocketbook, it appears UCLA and Steve Alford will likely be together until at least 2016.

According to a Los Angles Times report Monday night that specifically cited the buyout terms of the UCLA basketball coach’s seven-year, $18.2 million deal, the two parties are locked in identical buyout clauses that would require a payout of $10.4 million from the early-acting side should the contract be terminated prior to April 30, 2016, or three years into Alford’s tenure.
