Students held up at gunpoint

Three students were robbed at gunpoint at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday.

The students were walking down Hilgard Avenue when they turned onto Weyburn Avenue and they approached a lone man holding a handgun. The man pressed the gun to one victim’s torso and demanded all three victims’ property. They gave it to him, and he ran to a waiting vehicle and drove off.

Nancy Greenstein, director of police community services for university police, said this appears to be an isolated incident.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 25 years old, 5 feet, 11 inches and about 175 pounds. His weapon was a blue steel automatic handgun. The vehicle is described as a newer-model, two-door Lexus or Infiniti. The car had no license plates.

Greenstein said police always advise students not to walk alone, but in this case, even that didn’t prevent the crime.

“Stay alert; stay attuned to what’s going on around you. If you see suspicious activities or people, you can always cross the street (or) take a different path,” Greenstein said.

She also said students should alert UCPD immediately of anything unusual.

“You should have your cell phone programmed so if you see something suspicious you can call us right away. If something doesn’t look right, just call us,” Greenstein said.

UCPD dispatch can always be reached at (310) 825-1491.
