Grapevine

You may have noticed that Grapevine was on hiatus last week.
Grapevine had a hot Valentine’s Day date, so we gave it the day
off. But we know you plan your weekend in strict accordance with
A&E’s suggestions (humor us, okay?), so we’re back our usual
cornucopia of stimulating activities to conquer the post-three day
weekend blues.

CAMPUS

I don’t have a car

We’re not sure what Palme d’Or means either, but Japanese
director Shohei Imamura won the award twice at the Cannes film
festival and the press release says it’s coveted. So be happy that
UCLA’s Film and Television Archive got its metaphorical hands on
three of Imamura’s films. Catch them on campus this weekend.

"The Ballad of Narayama:" Saturday, 7 p.m.

"Endless Desire," "Stolen Desire:" Sunday, 7 p.m.

James Bridges Theater

Tickets: $6, $4

(310) 206-FILM

VIDEO

I don’t feel like walking

If Adam Sandler is making you nostalgic for the days of teased
hair and mushy high school romance, check out Eric Stoltz, Mary
Stuart Masterson and Lea Thompson in this truly heart-wrenching
love triangle. It’s classic ’80s, yet it doesn’t involve John
Hughes or any member of the brat pack.

"Some Kind of Wonderful"

FOOD

I’m hungry

Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles is just that and it fixes
its specialties with lots of soul and lots of fat. So if the
L.A.-ness of L.A. is driving you crazy, head to one of ‘Scoe’s two
locations for gravy smothered evening.

PERFORMANCE

I like it live

In Shakespeare’s day, the groundlings were sort of the
equivalent of student rush tickets–they got the dregs of theater
seating, but soaked up culture nonetheless. But we’ve heard good
things about L.A.’s Groundlings, a comedy/improv troupe that
regularly stages their stuff on Melrose.

Fridays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 and 10 p.m.

Tickets: $17.50

FILM

I lived the ’80s in the ’80s, thank you very much

So Adam Sandler is a little too Happy (CQ) for you and Drew
Barrymore is a little too pouty. We respect your opinion. Instead
join Kenny, Cartman, Frank Hill and other animated pals at the
World Animation Celebration. Watch high school students create a
feature length film in one day only and ponder whether this could
be an event in the Winter Olympics of 2002.
