Brief: Wittrock, professor emeritus of education, dies at 76

Merlin C. Wittrock, professor emeritus of education at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, died at the age of 76 on Nov. 28.

He began working at UCLA as an assistant professor of education in 1960 and founded the UCLA Center for the Study of Evaluation in 1966.

He was also head of the division of education psychology from 1986 to 1994 and was chairman of the faculty from 1991 to 1993.

He was also heavily involved in UCLA Extension, serving as faculty advisor to UCLA Education Extension, which was the first elementary credential program to be offered through the school.

He received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990 and has published over 200 texts.

He was a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.
