Statewide earthquake drill scheduled for Thursday morning

UCLA students can expect to experience a statewide earthquake drill on Thursday morning at 10:18 a.m.

The activity is part of the state’s fourth annual Great California ShakeOut, a drill intended to prepare citizens in the case of an earthquake. Union Station, Los Angeles Metro and other institutions all across the state are slated to participate, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Student leaders in Bruin Plaza will play a state-approved audio recording instructing people to “drop, cover and hold on” to practice for an actual earthquake emergency, said Michael Stajura, a doctoral student at UCLA and organizer of the UCLA event.

Separate departments and regions on the UCLA campus, such as the Office of Residential Life, will also partake in an earthquake drill, Stajura said.

The organizers will stay in Bruin Plaza until 2 p.m. to hand out emergency preparedness information and promotional items, he added.

Student groups at UCLA, such as the Red Cross organization, plan to hold a similar emergency preparedness fair in Westwood on Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m.
