With nearly 100 venues all across Los Angeles participating in ARTmageddon, the choices are almost endless. So to avoid hoofing it to every exhibit and show, we’ve highlighted a few events closer to campus as well as ones a little further for those more adventurous art seekers.
Sept. 29-30, Free, “Zarina: Paper Like Skin” and “Graphic Design: Now in Production,” Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd.:
Where the retrospective showing “Zarina: Paper Like Skin” explores how paper was used as an art medium in the last half of the century, “Graphic Design: Now in Production” delves into a more modern artistic practice by analyzing the expanding field of graphic design. Both art exhibits open on Sept. 29, but museum admission is free for the whole weekend.
Sept. 28-30, Free, “In Extremis: Death and Life in 21st-Century Haitian Art,” Fowler Museum, Campus:”
From industrial cogs and scraps of clothing to the fusion of used car parts and human skulls, “In Extremis” presents the work of about 70 artists and their response to the natural disasters and political upheaval that have plagued Haiti in recent years.
Sept. 28 @ 6 p.m., Free, Son of the Drum, Royce Terrace, Campus:
Put on in celebration of the 405 Freeway weekend closure, this free jam session, tailgate party and musical workshop will feature Los Angeles native band Son of the Drum. Audience members are invited to participate after listening to the group’s Cuban hip-hop sound. Discounts on drinks and food are available for students during the performance.
Sept. 28 @ 8 p.m., $15 for students, Bebel Gilberto and Forro in the Dark, Royce Hall, Campus:
Brazilian bossa nova singer Bebel Gilberto will headline this Friday with her fusion of samba and jazz sound, while New York-based Forro in the Dark will open by shaking the towers of Royce Hall with their Brazilian party music. Student tickets go on sale Sept. 24.
Sept. 28-30 @ 7 p.m., $24 online/ $30 at the door, Paranoia Halloween, 395 Santa Monica Place, Third Level:
Halloween haunts start early this year when Santa Monica Place transforms into three nightmarish mazes including “The Infirmary,” “Insomniac Clown Playhouse” and “Granny’s Manor of Mayhem.” Dare to find your way through these terrifying obstacles during this haunted attraction’s premier weekend.
Sept. 28-29 @ 8 p.m., $10, Rodney King performance, Bootleg Theater, 2220 Beverly Blvd.:
Watch as improvisational solo speaker Roger Guenveur Smith attempts to broach the topic of unity within humanity after reflecting on the Los Angeles riots of the early ’90s. Audience members are invited to stay after to participate in a discussion about the performance.
Sept. 28 @ 6 p.m., Free, Sheetal Gandhi’s “I Am You,” Annenberg Community Beach House, 415 Pacific Coast Hwy:
Join Los Angeles choreographer and UCLA alumna Sheetal Gandhi for an evening dance that winds around the Annenberg Community Beach House. Celebrating nature and community, the dance will inspire the audience to reflect upon life’s dualities.
