An 18-year-old man died on the UCLA campus Friday night after losing control of his bicycle and crashing into a cement wall, according to officials in the Los Angeles Police Department.
At about 9:50 p.m. Friday night, Los Angeles resident Jerico Culata was riding southbound on De Neve Drive near the road’s intersection with Charles E. Young Drive as part of a Critical Mass bike ride, when he crashed into a nearby wall, said LAPD officer Sara Faden.
He was transported to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center where he died from injuries sustained in the crash at 10:05 p.m.
Culata was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and it is unknown whether any other cyclists were injured in the collision, Faden said.
Critical Mass bike rides are monthly rides that take place on the last Friday of the month in various cities around the world. The number of participants range from a few dozen to several hundred depending on location, though Los Angeles hosts the largest Critical Mass event in the country, according to the the Critical Mass website.
