Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced his running mate today.
“As we move forward in this campaign and on to help lead the nation to better days, it is an honor to announce my running mate and the next Vice President of the United States: Paul Ryan,” Romney said, standing in front of Nauticus, a naval museum in Norfolk, VA.
Congressman Paul Ryan (R”“Wisconsin), Romney’s new running mate, is currently the chairman of the House Budget Committee. Ryan is a key proponent of conservative tax and spending blueprints that have met strong Democratic opposition over the years, according to the Associated Press.
“I believe my record of getting things done in Congress will be a very helpful complement to Governor Romney’s executive and private sector success outside Washington,” Ryan said in front of the crowd after his introduction. “I have worked closely with Republicans as well as Democrats to advance an agenda of economic growth, fiscal discipline, and job creation.”
Representatives from President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign also responded to the announcement, commenting on Ryan’s track record as a congressman.
“The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires and deep cuts in education, from Head Start to college aid,” Jim Messina, Obama’s campaign manager, told the Associated Press in a written statement.
The Democratic party is expected to make its official endorsement of current President Obama and current Vice President Joe Biden in early September. Republican delegates from across the country will convene at the Republican National Convention later this month to officially nominate a candidate to run against Obama.
