One person reported dead in plane crash about two miles from UCLA campus

One person is reported dead in a small plane crash that occurred in Westwood, about two miles from UCLA, on Friday evening, fire officials said.

The small, fixed-wing plane crashed around 6 p.m. at the corner of Glendon and Mississippi avenues, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman at the Los Angeles Fire Department. The crash caused a fire that was extinguished within five minutes of the crash, and the smoke could be seen from the UCLA campus.

No other injuries have been reported, and no other people have been reported missing. Humphrey said there were no obvious signs of another person at the crash site, besides the person who was killed.

The plane landed near a home at 2111 South Glendon Ave. a little less than two miles from the Santa Monica Municipal Airport. The home was not struck by the plane, Humphrey said.

The crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
