UCLA football coach Jim Mora initially intended to have a starting quarterback chosen at the end of spring practice. However, when a victor didn’t emerge, he moved the selection deadline till the end of summer camp.
Halfway through camp, Mora kept his word, announcing redshirt freshman Brett Hundley as the starter on August 10.
Hundley had been in the midst of a competition for the starting nod with redshirt senior Kevin Prince and senior Richard Brehaut this past offseason.Â
Out of high school, Hundley was considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the country ““ lauded for his athleticism and arm strength. After a strong showing throughout spring practice, he separated himself during preseason camp in San Bernardino, emerging as a leader.
“All four quarterbacks have raised their level of play significantly since my staff and I took over, and we are excited about all of them,” said Mora. “That said, Brett has consistently demonstrated the qualities we value in a starting quarterback and is an outstanding leader who commands the respect of his teammates. He has shown excellent decision-making skills, and his accuracy and timing continue to improve with each practice. In addition, he has shown the mobility and creativity needed when a play breaks down.”
