The UCLA School of Dentistry’s plans to create a new research training program will move forward, after the National Institutes of Health announced a $5 million grant for the school on Monday.
“This grant is critical for the development of future leaders, scientists and academics in our profession,” Dr. No-Hee Park, dean of the UCLA School of Dentistry, said in a statement. “As the dean, I am very proud of this grant, as it will help fulfill (the school of dentistry’s) mission.”
Under the new program, participants will enter one of five training tracks designed for dentists pursuing a doctoral degree or postdoctoral training. They will be mentored by dental school faculty in fields such as bone biology and bioengineering.
This is the third time the grant has been renewed, but the newest funds will cover the participation of foreign students, according to a statement from the university. The five-year grant funds a program aimed at helping dentists advance their field through science and research.
