A UCLA student was sexually assaulted early Friday morning near Saxon Suites, according to university police.
The student was climbing to the top of the Saxon Steps leading from Gayley Avenue around 2:20 a.m. when a man called out to her, according to a police statement released today. The two had a brief conversation, said Nancy Greenstein, a UCPD spokeswoman.
The man then sexually assaulted the student, the report stated.
The student got away from the man and contacted university police, Greenstein said. By the time police arrived, the man had fled the scene, she said.
The man is described in the report as white, 21 years old, 6 feet, 150 pounds, with short, brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a white T-shirt and shorts, the report stated.
It is not yet known whether the victim knew her attacker and whether he was a fellow student, Greenstein said.
Police recommend students be aware of their surroundings and not walk alone at night. Students should call escort services or arrange walking groups or alternate transportation if planning on walking after 1 a.m.
University police are currently investigating the assault. Anyone with information regarding the assault should contact UCPD at 310-825-1491.
