Hooligan Theatre Company's 'Mean Girls: The Musical' stays true to movie

The Plastics found their way to Moore 100 on Saturday and Sunday when the student-run organization Hooligan Theatre Company put on “Mean Girls: The Musical.”

Hooligan’s members made the decision to replicate the popular teen film and host the play a year ago, just after they performed their version of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The cast had three performances, with the first on Saturday night and the others on Sunday night.

The show ran for just more than two hours and had 11 musical numbers throughout the performance. The dialogue and plot held true to the movie with a strong emphasis on all of the most popular lines and catchphrases such as “That was so fetch” and “She doesn’t even go to this school.”

Several times, cast and crew would sing and dance their way up the aisles. This incorporated the crowd into the show, and in one scene, the crowd actually played a role from in the movie.

In the film, there is a scene in which the Plastics are dancing along to “Jingle Bell Rock” and one of the characters accidentally kicks the boom-box off the stage, stopping the music. At this point in the movie the lead character, Cady Heron, starts singing and encourages the crowd to join in.

The same thing happened over the weekend as the crowd joined into the show by signing the majority of “Jingle Bell Rock.”

The show also had a UCLA tint to the dialogue, with multiple UCLA-specific allusions, including Alexandra Wallace to social commentary on professors earning tenure.

All of the musical scores were written by the cast and crew, and were set to popular tracks including “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Telephone” and “Bad Reputation.”

The show was performed, run, organized and directed entirely by UCLA students.
