UCLA’s football roster shrunk slightly on Wednesday when the school announced that four players are ineligible to play in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 31.
Senior safety Tony Dye, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Albert Cid and redshirt sophomore linebacker Isaiah Bowens have been deemed academically ineligible based on fall quarter grades. Meanwhile, junior quarterback Richard Brehaut has been suspended for the bowl game because of a violation of team rules.
None of the aforementioned players will travel with the team on Dec. 26.
“All four of these student-athletes are disappointed that they will miss the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, but they all understand that they have let their teammates and the program down and that there are consequences for their actions,” interim coach Mike Johnson said.
Dye sustained an ankle injury in the team’s final regular season game against USC and had a chance to make it back for the bowl game but will now miss his chance at capping off his injury-laden senior season with a bowl win.
Cid’s playing time decreased as the season wore on because of the improved play of redshirt freshman Wade Yandall while Bowens appeared in 12 games but didn’t start all season.
Brehaut got four starts at quarterback before fracturing his leg on Oct. 8 against Washington State. He appeared briefly in the Pac-12 Championship game ““ relieving redshirt junior Kevin Prince ““ but only threw two passes, one of which was intercepted.
