UC President Mark Yudof releases statement on recent protests

University of California President Mark Yudof commended peaceful protests happening across the UC in a statement released today.

Protests in UC Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza and in Sacramento reflect broad frustration with recent budget cuts to the UC and California State University systems, Yudof said. He added that he was “touched” and “moved” at seeing students’ commitment to keeping the UC affordable.

The statement further indicated that Yudof “unequivocally supported
(students’) right to protest peacefully.” Yudof said he was concerned about the violence that broke out last week at UC Berkeley, and that an investigation is underway.

The UC president also said he sent his sympathy to the family of
Christopher Travis, who brandished a gun at UC Berkeley and was shot by the campus police on Tuesday. Travis later died in the hospital.
