USAC Recap ““ Sept. 27

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed fourth-year biology student Leslie Grant to the Eating and Activities Task Force.
  • The council appointed Thomas Atkins to the ASUCLA Communications Board with a vote of 7-1-0.
  • The council unanimously appointed third-year political science student Adam Swart to the Transportation Services Advisory Board.

This week’s contingency allocations passed unanimously.

Officer Reports

  • President Emily Resnick will be circulating a petition to the other members of the council to bring back apron parking to Westwood. She also announced that Adam Swart, the president’s office chief of staff, will be attending a press conference with University of California President Mark Yudof on Oct. 22.
  • Kristina Sidrak, internal vice president, discussed having corporate sponsorship at future USAC events. The idea came from a meeting with corporate sponsors which may become involved in subsidizing the cost of next month’s homecoming events.
  • Joelle Gamble, external vice president, spoke about student efforts to advocate for SB 185, a bill currently awaiting Gov. Jerry Brown’s approval. Gamble’s office put on a call-in day to push the bill, and more than 200 calls were made.
  • Raquel Saxe, academics affairs commissioner, discussed the renaming of the Student Writing Center to the Undergraduate Writing Center to limit acronym confusion. The center will utilize online capabilities. Saxe also spoke about trying to discover a way to replace Covel’s Academics in the Commons workshops, which were discontinued earlier this year. Lastly, she discussed an attempt to create a Student Academic Senate with members from various USAC groups.
