Breaking down new tunes from Lady Gaga and Radiohead

In my “Pop Psychology” column this week, I discuss new music from two of the world’s biggest musical acts: Lady Gaga and Radiohead.

Gaga has a new single called “Born This Way,” which you can listen to here.

She performed the song recently at the Grammys, after emerging onstage from a giant egg. She plays a very cool-looking organ partway into the performance, but only for a few seconds, which seems kind of pointless. You can watch that here.

A number of people have pointed out that the song sounds uncannily similar to Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” and I have to agree. It’s not surprising, considering how much of an influence the Material Girl has had on Gaga’s career. You can judge just how alike they are by listening here.

Radiohead, meanwhile, has a video for the first single from “The King of Limbs,” a great song called “Lotus Flower.” It’s a very simple video, just their singer Thom Yorke dancing the way only Thom Yorke can. Ever since “Kid A” came out in 2000, he’s been known for doing a similarly ridiculous dance to “Idioteque” – it’s nice to see he’ll have another option now when they go on tour. You can watch that video here.
