“I’m Too Sexy” played as a fairy, a girl in a leopard costume and a guy with only a UCLA towel protecting his dignity stood in a row on stage.
Ackerman Grand Ballroom just saw the Dance Marathon’s costume contest, where the winners were chosen by the level of reaction they received from the audience. The winners were a space cowboy, a giant leprechaun and a group dressed in pink onesies.
Onesies seemed to be the costume of choice for this round. It’s absolutely boiling on the dance floor, so it’s hard not to wonder if they’re melting under all the fleece.
The five-piece band thatwasthen took the stage to play their blend of blues, soul and rock. Their renditions of classics such as “Twist and Shout” were great for sing-a-longs; the crowd jumped up and down in unison, screaming “You make me want to shout” along with the band.
The dance floor was littered with children, a few of whom were stealing the show with their dance moves. One girl, who looked about six years old, was wowing watchers with flips and splits. A few dancers picked up hoops to dance with. I’ve walked past one girl with the same hoop around her hips five times ““ this could be a 26-hour hoop-a-thon.
