UCLA-Washington State, First Quarter

Terrence Austin returned the opening kick-off 22 yards, and didn’t look quite as explosive as he did last week when he set the UCLA record for most kick-return yards in one game.

UCLA fullback Chane Moline just lined up at wide receiver, and quarterback Kevin Craft threw to the other side of the field to Taylor Embree. Coach Rick Neuheisel said Moline, who started this season at tailback, is slightly more versatile than Trevor Theriot.

UCLA has not thrown downfield much in the past few weeks. , but Kevin Craft threw two deep fades, one to Terrence Austin and another to Dominque Johnson, on the Bruins’ first possession.

Brian Price, the Bruins’ big, bruising defensive tackle. just burst through the line and tackled running back Dwight Tardy for a five yard loss. Price toppled Washington State quarterback Marshall Lobbestael, too.

UCLA safety Brett Locket has missed two tackles on Washington State’s first drive.

On third down and four UCLA pressured Cougars’ quarterback Marshall Lobbestael, and Lobbestael looked rattled. He threw a short pass into the ground and shook his head angrily as he trotted off the field. This is the first start of Lobbestael’s career.

A slow start for UCLA; Kahlil Bell was stopped on third and short and UCLA failed to convert a first down on its second offensive possession.

It was a poor snap from Washington State’s Zach Enyeart, but punter Reid Forrest managed to catch it and get a punt off. That punt rolled and rolled until it was downed at the UCLA two yard line. The Bruins will have to deal with some terrible field possession to start thier third drive.

Kahlil Bell barely avoided a safety on the next play. The Bruins have tried to run straight up the middle twice in a row, and they haven’t gained a yard.

That Bell play is under review. The call on the field stands.

On third and ten from their own one yard line, will UCLA try to get some more room for punter Aaron Perez or go for the first down? Craft tried a short pass to Taylor Embree, but it fell incomplete.

Perez got off a decent punt but Washington State will still have excellent field position.

Washington State running back Dwight Tardy just fumbled after he was stripped by Alterraun Verener. The ball rolled through three Bruins’ legs before Washington State recovered.

Lobbestael just missed wide receiver Jeshua Anderson on third down and two. He is 4-8 so far and a few of those incompletions were way off target.

Kahlil Bell just lined up at fullback and caught a play-action pass from Kevin Craft. Cornerback Romeo Pellum grabbed Bell’s facemask as he tried to tackle him, and a 15-yard personal foul penalty was added to the end of the gain.
