The Undergraduate Student Association Council started its Tuesday meeting with a discussion regarding the "capstone experiences" Vice Provost Judith Smith presented earlier this month.
During the Nov. 6 meeting, Smith informed the council of UCLA’s progress in reaccredidation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. She proposed future university implementation of capstone projects that all fourth-year students would be required to complete prior to their graduation.
Some council members said they were unsure about mandatory senior capstone projects.
General Representative Michelle Lyon said she was concerned about potential mental health effects on undergraduate students, especially on those students who can be easily overwhelmed with multiple-major commitments. Also, Cultural Affairs Commissioner Bernice Shaw said mandatory projects could possibly affect students’ abilities to participate in extracurricular activities as well as their graduation timeliness.
President Gabe Rose said the senior project seems like a great idea.
"It can be helpful for recommendations and closer relationships with teachers. It can be an opportunity for resources," said Rose.
The council finally passed a resolution that approved the capstone project proposal, but the resolution also included the concerns previously expressed by members.
Later in the meeting, the council voted on various changes to the Office Space Allocation Guidelines. The council already approved some changes that will allow greater opportunities for more student organizations to apply for office space.
