_Fresh Takes: First-year student learns art of balancing academic life and social obligations_

By Hector Lerma

Hey fellow Bruins! As many of my peers may agree, being a freshman at such an amazing school can be really overwhelming for the first few weeks. Already in the fourth week, I am still trying to manage my time.

But I have had many great experiences so far that have helped me transition into college life. I moved in with my fellow move-in assistants into Hedrick Hall and met new people, many of whom I share classes with and have dinners with nightly.

My roommates have made dorm life amazing. Who said living in a small triple dorm room would be hectic? All I’ve encountered so far are laughs and great moments.

Our floor is fun, too. Recently many of my floormates in Three South did some amusing things ““ the first being a “Slender” game night during which we played the popular suspense computer game together at the lounge with the lights off.

For some more fun, we picked a day to go to Bruin Café for a late night run.

One of my friends thought of bringing blankets, so there we went ““ 10 college students from the same floor heading down to Bruin Café with blankets as our cloaks.

Rush week was an awesome experience. I rushed for Delta Lambda Phi and all I can say is that it has been one of the best things I’ve done so far at UCLA.

I got to meet more people and more friends, and I eventually became a pledge and am on my way to becoming a brother. I know I made the right choice to attend these socials, and I am now awaiting a great future with these amazing gentlemen.

Yes, being a freshman has been a great ride so far. Social life is just as important as study life for some of us. As midterms roll around, I now realize that I’ve been here for a month.

I also realize that a short taste of how my college life will be as I continue my studies has been laid out in front of me, and I am willing to take the wheel.

Lerma is a first-year biochemistry student.
