USAC Recap – Sept. 18

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • Campus Events commissioner Jan Tancinco and Student Wellness commissioner Cassarah Chu were absent.
  • Contingency allocations were approved by a vote of 8-1-1.
  • Third-year economics student Helen Alonzo was unanimously approved as the Finance Committee vice-chair. Second-year English student Christopher Cantu and Ricardo Pacheco, a second-year political science student , were unanimously approved as Finance Committee auditors.

Officer reports

  • President David Bocarsly said he met with the Student Giving Committee about having a competition at the UCLAUSC football game in which fans text to donate $10 to a scholarship fund for the college of their choice.
  • Andrea “Andi” Hester, internal vice president, said she and Lana Habib El-Farra, external vice president, met with the UNITE committee, a UC system-wide committee in which students can discuss campus climate. Hester said she met with Cynthia Jasso, Finance Committee chair, about updating the student group funding calendar. Hester said one of her office’s goals this year is to co-program more with the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars.
  • El-Farra said she met with Student Regent Jonathan Stein about the UNITE committee. El-Farra said the University of California Student Association’s Students Vote! campaign will launch Sunday. El-Farra also said the UC Office of the President is allocating $20,000 for the association’s voter registration efforts. El-Farra said her office will be registering student voters during zero week events.
  • Kim Davis, Academic Affairs commissioner, said she met with the Writing Success Program board and staff from the Undergraduate Student Writing Center. She said she plans to work on expanding and publicizing the Undergraduate Student Writing Center.
  • Taylor Mason, Cultural Affairs commissioner, said Christine Mata, assistant dean of campus climate, is partnering with Tiffani Garnett of the Bruin Resource Center’s Intergroup Relations Program to work on the Diversity Collaborative Committee. Mason said the committee will act as a direct point of contact on campus for the chancellor’s diversity initiatives. Mason asked councilmembers to compile a calendar of all USAC events to send to Mata for reference.

Appointments

  • Jas Kirt, a second-year political science and economics student, was unanimously approved to the Student Fee Advisory Committee, a student-majority committee that recommends how the Chancellor should allocate student fees. Darren Ramalho, a third-year political science and English student, was approved to the committee by a vote of 8-0-2.
  • Brenda Gutierrez, a second-year undeclared student, was unanimously approved to the Student Activities Center Board of Governors.
