Anthony Barr, outside linebacker

On the surface, junior Anthony Barr’s transition from F back to outside linebacker may seem perplexing. But watching Barr on defense quickly makes it clear why the former running back is now making tackles instead of breaking them.

Barr is one of the biggest defensive players not on the line. During fall camp, coach Jim Mora said that he was impressed with the success Barr has had dropping back into coverage.

Barr’s size and athleticism make him an intriguing player on the defensive end and a player with an opportunity to make a big impact.

Steven Manfro, receiver

Expectations are high for Steven Manfro, a redshirt freshman running back. Though he did not see any action in his first season with the Bruins, he appears groomed and ready to contribute in 2012. He caught attention in the spring game, with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Since then, Manfro has continued to impress, and looks to be a major part of the Bruins this season. He’s listed at the top of the depth chart for kick off returners and F receivers going into their opening day game against Rice.

Jeff Locke, punter

Redshirt senior Jeff Locke is widely acknowledged as one of the top punters in the nation. In the last three years, he’s garnered wide acclaim for his abilities, including recently being named to the Ray Guy Award watch list.

Going into his final season, Locke looks to be a major factor in the 2012 Bruin equation. If he is at the top of his game, UCLA will have nothing to worry about when it comes to punts. He has been one of the most consistent players the Bruins have had in recent years and his strong leg will make the defense’s job easier by controlling opposing teams’ field position.

Devin Lucien, receiver

Receiver Devin Lucien will make his college debut this season after redshirting his first year out of high school. Lucien isn’t the tallest or the fastest receiver on the team, but has shown a knack this offseason for making big plays. He will start the season as a reserve, but his ability may provide him with an opportunity to start at some point during the season. Regardless, Lucien will see plenty of snaps and will be able to make an impact as a starter or off of the bench.
