Officer Reports

  • President David Bocarsly said he met with Steve Gamer, executive director of the UCLA Foundation, about creating a leadership development fund. Bocarsly said the fund would work to subsidize programming funds with outside sponsorships. Bocarsly said he also met with Rhea Turteltaub, assistant vice chancellor for external affairs, and Keith Parker, assistant vice chancellor for government and community relations, to discuss ways students can work with the UCLA administration to lobby local, state and national government. Bocarsly said he met with Raja Bhattar, director of the UCLA LGBT Resource Center, about the center’s partnering with USAC. Bocarsly said Bhattar suggested USAC participate in an Allies training course, a program that teaches how to create a safe environment for LGBT students.
  • Avi Oved, acting as a proxy for Andrea “Andi” Hester, internal vice president, said that Hester’s office is planning to have a student leader networking night in week 3 of fall quarter. The proxy said Hester met with Nancy Greenstein, director of Police Community Services at UCLA, about offering a ride-along with the university police to councilmembers and interested student groups.
  • Lana Habib El-Farra, external vice president, said her office plans to take about 65 UCLA students to the University of California Student Association’s annual UC Student Congress in August. El-Farra said she hopes her office will register 5,000 UCLA students to vote by October 22. El-Farra is working with UCLA Summer Orientation and the Freshman Summer Program staff to register incoming students to vote, she added.
  • Kim Davis, Academic Affairs commissioner, said she met with Frank Wada, UCLA university registrar, who is creating the integrated webframe experience, which will combine BruinBill, the UCLA Registrar’s Office, the University Records System Access and MyUCLA into one central website. Davis said she talked with a student who is working on developing a mobile application students can use to enroll in classes.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Jonathan Waxer, a fourth-year psychobiology student, to the student advocate position. The student advocate is independent from the USAC offices and will serve as a resource for students to get information about studying abroad, transferring courses to UCLA and other issues.
