USAC Recap ““ May 31

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Officer Reports

  • Internal Vice President Kristina Sidrak spoke about a proposal to create mobile applications for UCLA students, which will include features like dining hall menus.
  • External Vice President Joelle Gamble announced her plans to meet with U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein to discuss how the senator can best support student government.
  • Gamble’s office is also working on coordinating a solution-oriented lobbying strategy to keep the FlyAway service.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Raquel Saxe is working to get class syllabi online before enrollment. Her office is also in talks with the Muslim Student Association regarding a proposal to develop an “Introduction to Islam” undergraduate general education course. The association said it hopes to have a plan for such a class ready by fall.
  • Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kinnery Shah said her office plans to create a full-length documentary on next year’s JazzReggae festival, the student-led, student-run event that took place on the intramural field over Memorial Day weekend.

Appointments

  • The Council unanimously approved the appointment of Ronald Arruejo for another term as Finance Committee Chairperson.
  • The Council approved Maggie Thornton to the ASUCLA Board of Directors with a vote of 4-0-8.
  • The Council unanimously approved the appointment of Jake Ferrari for ASUCLA Board of Directors.

Other

  • Administrative representative Deb Geller said the university police are seeking feedback from student government and other students on a potential uniform change. The clothing change would involve officers wearing armor outside their shirts instead of underneath, where it is currently worn.
