Though the UCLA men’s and women’s tennis teams are no longer in contention for a title, individual Bruins still have a shot to earn some accolades at the NCAA Individual Championships.
The singles tournaments take place in Palo Alto today through Monday, while the doubles competitions start Thursday and will also run through Monday. The Bruin men, whose season ended with a 4-3 loss to Baylor in the Round of 16 on Thursday, will be represented by the team’s top two singles players in freshman Daniel Kosakowski and senior Amit Inbar. Kosakowski, who won Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors, will play Artem Ilyushin from Mississippi State today. Inbar, who was selected to the Pac-10 All-Conference second team, will take on Vahid Mirzadeh of Florida State.
The women’s team, which was eliminated 4-0 by Florida in the semifinals on Monday, will send junior McCall Jones and senior Noelle Hickey, who are also the team’s top two singles players. Jones plays Shannon Mathews from Notre Dame today and Hickey will take on Katie Rybakova of Florida State.
Hickey and Jones will also take part in the doubles tournament, playing Brynn Boren and Natalie Pluskota of Tennessee. They will be joined by freshman Courtney Dolehide and senior Andrea Remynse, who will play Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale from North Carolina.
