A Wall Street Journal op-ed recently proposed banning fraternities. What do you think of this proposal, and do you think the stereotypes surrounding fraternities are true?

Tracy Tran
Third-year, psychology

“I don’t think (a ban) is a good idea since frats are a very intrinsic part of college culture. When I think college, I think frats and sororities, so (a ban) would take away from the idea of college.”

Joseph Lee
First-year, mechanical engineering

“I think it really depends on the fraternity. Some frats more than others have a lot of alcohol and drugs, but others have networking opportunities. You can ban underage drinking and place regulations on drug abuse, but I don’t think (fraternities) should be banned.”

“I think stereotypes exist for a reason, but I don’t think anyone should base such a big decision on stereotypes alone.”

“I’m not in the Greek system at all, nor do I want to be, but it’s not a good idea to ban fraternities. People come to college for different reasons including social activities. If that’s for you and you want it, it’s there, but if not, then leave it alone.”
