To continue her efforts this past year as Community Service commissioner, this board endorses incumbent Jamie Yao, an independent candidate.

Yao has been a student voice to the administration regarding Volunteer Day and the Volunteer Center.

In the past, this board has criticized the day as lacking depth and failing to engage students. Yao has worked with the center to enhance the educational aspect of the event by briefing students on issues afflicting the site where they are volunteering. Student groups will also be able to apply to host a site for volunteers, she said.

Yao also brought up the idea of university sponsorship of activities. She said the university can insure a group’s community service activities; this could allow the student group to save the money that is normally spent on insurance.

Giving student groups another usually expensive resource for free, Yao has also added another van, used to transport students to volunteer sites, to the office’s resources. She hopes to continue providing groups with materials and food as well.
